Dirt Bikers

Feature Story

I can’t make a website without telling my own crash story. So I wasn’t on 2 wheels, rather, I was on my quad. My husband always told me not to ride so close. I soon discovered why.

The Accident

We were in Barstow, which for the record is a very rocky place. I remember riding on a trail that was slightly elevated above the ground. Since I was just a beginner, I was a little bit slower than everyone else. So to make sure I didn’t get too far behind, I would ride real close to the person in front of me…big mistake. Because I was riding so close, I didn’t notice that the trail turned ever so slightly. That’s what happens when you ride too close. You end up being in someone’s dust cloud and can’t see the trail as good. The next thing I knew, my quad was on 2 wheels. I remember trying to get back on the trail by turning my handlebars, but it was too late. I felt like I was being thrown off my quad. As soon as I hit the ground, my helmet popped off, I went sliding face first in the dirt, and that’s not all. I could hear my quad tumbling on the ground. I was hoping it would tumble away from me, but no, it stopped right on top of my body. You can check out the damage below.

The first thing I did was yell for help. I couldn’t move. My husband came to my rescue and got the quad off me. Instead of making sure I was okay, he made sure to take a picture. I remember spitting up blood and thinking I lost my front teeth. Luckily, the blood was from my fat lip and from the little rocks that were lodged in my gums. I felt like throwing up and got so dizzy. After that was over, I started feeling pain in my side and in my shoulder. I later found out that I busted two ribs, more than likely from my quad crushing me.

Lessons Learned

So of course there were a few lessons I learned that day. First lesson is not to ride so close. Second lesson is to fasten the strap on your helmet. Yup, my strap was not fastened, which is why my helmet popped off and why my face looked like I got into a good bar fight. The nice part in all of this is that it happened less than a month after my wedding day. Had it happened right before the wedding, then I would have been pretty upset. Since it happened after, it wasn’t as bad.

The next time I got back on my quad, I was a little shaky…but I got over it. Now I ride a quad and a dirt bike. Haven’t eaten it on my dirt bike, but I’m sure it’s bound to happen.

Quick Bio

I’m 25 years and from Southern California. Riding is a new thing for me. I started late in the game at the age of 23. I never really heard much about off roading or riding until I met my husband. He asked me if I had ever been on an ATV, and I was like, “AT what?” He bought me a Honda 450R quad for my birthday a few years back, so I was forced to learn how to ride. Now I’m hooked. I love riding. Wish I had more time for it. It’s a great way to bond with family and friends. My favorite motocross racer is Bubba Stewart!
